    How share links work

A share link is an ordinary URL that opens a network's “share this” screen with your page filled in. The visitor still chooses whether to post. Because they are plain links, they need no SDK, set no cookies and load nothing until someone clicks.

X (twitter.com/intent/tweet), Telegram, Pinterest and Bluesky document these formats. Facebook's sharer.php, LinkedIn's share-offsite page, Reddit's submit page and wa.me are long-standing public share addresses. Networks change these from time to time, so click each Test link before a campaign.

Facebook and LinkedIn ignore any text you pass and build the preview from the page's own Open Graph tags (title, description, image), so those tags matter more than the link. You can preview them with our sister site OG Prism.

Before you share, check that the live page actually serves the Open Graph and Twitter card tags the networks read. WebTraceCheck's website audit lists them, along with the favicon links and web manifest.

Audit this page's social tags on WebTraceCheck (opens WebTraceCheck in a new tab)

    Share link questions

Why does Facebook ignore my text?

Facebook's sharer only accepts the page address. The title, description and image come from the og: tags in the shared page, and the person sharing writes their own message.

Do these buttons track my visitors?

Not until someone clicks. The snippet is plain HTML links with no scripts, so nothing is loaded from the networks when your page opens.

Why is the email link not opening in a new tab?

mailto: links hand off to the visitor's email app, so the snippet leaves target="_blank" off them to avoid an empty extra tab.
